Originally from Portsmouth, Ohio and called the The Portsmouth Spartans, The Detroit Lions started off in 1929 as an independent professional team. In the 1930 season the Spartans officially joined the National Football League, a time when other independent teams folded up due to the Great Depression. Although successful in the NFL the team could not survive in the small city of Portsmouth any longer and was eventually purchased and made the move to Detroit in 1934. The team has won 4 NFL Pre-Super Bowl championships but have yet to qualify for a Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions jerseys have relatively remained the same Honolulu blue color since its inception and the Detroit Lions logo, the blue Leaping Lion Logo made its debut in 1960. Wildly unpopular with fans, Matt Millen was hired as CEO of football operations after the 2000-2001 season. The teams head coach is Rod Marinelli and the current roster includes Jon Kitna, J. T.
