18 P_R_A_C_T_I_C_E_S

18 P_R_A_C_T_I_C_E_S is a contemporary dance work created by Montreal choreographer Andrew Turner.

Created in 2018, the piece reflects on the self and identity as a collection of incomplete, sometimes contradictory narratives that become inscribed in the body. Its approach is built around 18 practices or procedures with varied textures. Some come from dance, while others draw from personal obsessions and actions such as speaking backwards or spinning a lightsaber.

Homer's Odyssey, in Emily Wilson's 2017 translation, accompanies the creation without becoming its direct subject. Andrew Turner examines how new mnemonic information can alter or overwrite older habits. Turner left studies in history and philosophy to join Concordia University's dance department in 2001, and completed a master's degree in dance at UQAM in 2020. The work is co-produced with Danse-Cité, with music composition by David Drury, dramaturgy by Thea Patterson, and lighting design by Paul Chambers. Following a 2018 premiere at Tangente, 18 P_R_A_C_T_I_C_E_S was presented in Montreal in 2022 and later travelled to the FURIES festival in Gaspésie, Ljubljana, and Parcours Danse 2025. This work illuminates an important dimension of Andrew Turner's choreographic research.
