Beverly Glenn-Copeland is coming near you with the distinctive body of work of an American-born Canadian singer-songwriter, composer, musician, and actor whose influence has reached far beyond its original moment.
Born in Philadelphia in 1944, he made Canada his home and developed a musical language shaped by folk, jazz, classical music, and electronic sound. His 1971 self-titled album introduced that wide-ranging curiosity, while Keyboard Fantasies, self-released on cassette in Huntsville, Ontario, in 1986, became his defining record.
Created with a Yamaha DX7 and a Roland TR-707 drum machine, the album includes Ever New, Winter Astral, and Sunset Village. For years it remained little known, until Japanese record collector Ryota Masuko helped bring it to new listeners in 2015; it was reissued in 2017 and received the public-voted Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize in 2020. Glenn-Copeland also wrote for Sesame Street and spent 25 years as an actor on the Canadian children's program Mr. Dressup. The documentary Keyboard Fantasies: The Beverly Glenn-Copeland Story traces this remarkable path. His 2023 album The Ones Ahead was longlisted for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize.
