Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are coming near you with a Canadian roots rock partnership. Formed in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1996, the group unites singer-songwriters and musicians Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, and Colin Linden.
The project began as a tribute to Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett, whose song Blackie and the Rodeo King inspired the band's name. Their first album, High or Hurtin': The Songs of Willie P. Bennett, established a sound where folk, blues, country, and rock meet.
The trio continued with Kings of Love, which won the 2000 Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album by a Group, followed by Bark, Let's Frolic, South, and King of This Town. In 2011, Kings and Queens featured 14 duets with artists including Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams, Patti Scialfa, Cassandra Wilson, and Serena Ryder. Its 2017 companion, Kings and Kings, brought in Bruce Cockburn, Vince Gill, Jason Isbell, Keb' Mo', Nick Lowe, and Buddy Miller, among others. In 2022, the band released O Glory, an album of 13 original songs. Built around three creators whose solo careers have marked Canadian music, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remain a defining name in Canadian Americana.
