Celestial Currents is a concert dedicated to Carnatic music, bringing together three acclaimed artists from the South Indian classical tradition. Presented by Kabir Cultural Centre and Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham Montreal, the event features flutist Shashank Subramanyam, violinist Kamalakiran Vinjamuri and mridangam artist R. Sankaranarayanan. The program highlights the depth of Carnatic music while introducing audiences to one of the world's most enduring classical traditions.
Shashank Subramanyam is internationally recognized for his virtuosity and his contributions to the global appreciation of Carnatic flute performance. He is joined by Kamalakiran Vinjamuri, a violinist praised by the Music Academy of Chennai for his expressive musicianship, and by R. Sankaranarayanan, a distinguished mridangam performer and recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, an honour presented by the Government of India to outstanding young artists.
The concert focuses on ragas, rhythmic dialogue and improvisation, three defining elements of the Carnatic tradition. Through the interaction of flute, violin and percussion, the performance highlights the balance between melodic development and rhythmic complexity while celebrating the living heritage of South Indian classical music. The event also reflects Montréal's role as a meeting place for diverse cultural traditions and internationally respected artists.
