Cherepaka is a contemporary circus and contortion work created by Quebec artist Andréane Leclerc. Developed as part of her master's research in theatre at the Université du Québec à Montréal, the production explores the body, transformation and vulnerability through a minimalist theatrical language. Inspired by the paintings of Francis Bacon, the work moves beyond traditional acrobatic display by using contortion as a powerful form of artistic expression.
First presented in 2011 before beginning an international tour in 2014, Cherepaka has been performed at festivals and venues across Canada, France, Spain, Denmark, Brazil, the Czech Republic and several other countries. The production is presented by Nadère arts vivants, the company founded by Andréane Leclerc, whose artistic practice explores the intersection of contemporary circus, dance and physical theatre.
The title Cherepaka, meaning 'turtle' in Russian, reflects the central image of the work. The performance examines the contrast between the permanence of the shell and the fragility of flesh while exploring themes of mortality, transformation and the relationship between the body and time. Carefully crafted lighting, sound design and slow, deliberate movement contribute to its distinctive visual and choreographic language.
Through its innovative use of contortion and its international recognition, Cherepaka has established itself as an important work in Quebec's contemporary circus landscape. Buy your tickets on Tickets.ca now and discover Cherepaka.
