Choeur Baobab is coming to a city near you with a musical mission centered on celebrating African choral traditions and cultural exchange. Founded in Montreal in 2017 by Senegalese choir director and musician Gervais Koffi Djondo, the ensemble brings together singers from diverse cultural backgrounds who share a passion for African music and choral performance. Its repertoire draws inspiration from vocal traditions across West and Central Africa while incorporating contemporary arrangements that encourage dialogue between cultures and communities throughout Quebec.
Since its founding, Choeur Baobab has appeared at numerous cultural events, festivals and community celebrations in Montreal and across Quebec. The ensemble performs songs in several African languages, including Wolof, Lingala, Bambara and others depending on the musical traditions being presented. Its repertoire highlights themes such as solidarity, peace, cultural heritage and community, reflecting the richness and diversity of African musical traditions. Over the years, the choir has worked to introduce these traditions to broader audiences through multicultural festivals, artistic collaborations and public performances.
Alongside its musical activities, Choeur Baobab promotes cultural diversity and intercultural understanding through educational initiatives, workshops and collaborative projects. Its ongoing work reflects a commitment to preserving African vocal traditions while presenting them in a contemporary Canadian context. Through its inclusive vision, diverse repertoire and dedication to cultural exchange, Choeur Baobab has established a distinctive place within Quebec's choral community.
