Ciseaux revives Montreal’s queer history through a documentary cabaret created by Geneviève Labelle and Mélodie Noël Rousseau.
As founders of the company Pleurer Dans’ Douche, the two artists examine lesbian history from a feminist, celebratory and unapologetic perspective. Fans of socially engaged theatre will recognize their offbeat humour, collaborative spirit and commitment to making stories visible after they were excluded from mainstream narratives.
The work draws on archival materials, drag king numbers and testimony from prominent voices within sexual and gender diversity. Manon Massé, Safia Nolin, Judith Lussier, Monique Giroux and Eugénie Lépine-Blondeau are among the contributors featured in the project. Ciseaux traces important struggles, gathering spaces and defining moments from 70 years of Montreal’s lesbian history.
Created at Espace Libre in 2022, the production was later presented to sold-out audiences across Quebec and Europe. It continues the work of Pleurer Dans’ Douche, a queer feminist theatre company founded in 2016, following projects such as Rock Bière: Le Documentaire. For fans, Ciseaux is both a tribute to the people who opened doors for future generations and an invitation to think about representation, inclusion and the preservation of community memory.
