Cortex

Cortex is coming near you with more than fifty years of history connecting jazz-funk, bossa nova, psychedelic rock and Latin rhythms.

Founded in 1974 by pianist, composer and vocalist Alain Mion, the French group developed a signature built on intricate grooves, atmospheric vocals and melodies that later achieved cult status. For vinyl collectors and hip-hop fans, the Cortex catalogue remains a source of musical discovery.

Released in 1975, Troupeau Bleu is the group’s defining album. Recorded in only two days, it includes memorable tracks such as Huit Octobre 1971, Troupeau Bleu and L’Enfant Samba. Cortex continued its journey with Vol. 2 in 1977 and Pourquoi in 1978 before returning under Mion’s leadership in 2009.

A new generation discovered Cortex through sampling. Artists including MF DOOM, Madlib, Tyler, The Creator, Kanye West, Flying Lotus and Lupe Fiasco have drawn from the group’s recordings, strengthening its influence within contemporary rap. Rare and Lost Tapes, released in 2023, added another chapter to the band’s discography. For longtime followers and curious newcomers, Cortex offers a connection between the golden age of French jazz-funk and today’s hip-hop culture, proving how far these distinctive recordings continue to travel.
