Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a musical comedy set on the French Riviera, at the centre of a rivalry between two con artists.
Lawrence Jameson profits from wealthy women, while Freddy Benson exploits their compassion with invented stories. Their meeting triggers a contest: the first to obtain $50,000 from young heiress Christine Colgate wins, and the other must leave town. This story of manipulation and deception is adapted from the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
The musical version premiered on Broadway in 2005. The book is by Jeffrey Lane, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. The original production was directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels received 10 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical. Norbert Leo Butz won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Freddy Benson. Yazbek's songs, including Give Them What They Want, Great Big Stuff and Here I Am, support the story's satirical tone and shifting perspectives. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remains a recognized work of contemporary musical theatre.
