Fred Frith

Fred Frith is coming near you with more than five decades of creation at the intersection of experimental rock, improvisation, and contemporary music.

The English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser is recognized for his electric and acoustic guitar work, while also using bass, keyboards, violin, and homemade string instruments. In 1968, he co-founded the avant-rock collective Henry Cow with Tim Hodgkinson, a group that marked the beginning of his long musical path.

Fred Frith is also a founding member of Art Bears, Massacre, and Skeleton Crew. His catalogue includes solo projects, works for film, dance, and theatre, and collaborations with Robert Wyatt, the Residents, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton, Derek Bailey, and Evelyn Glennie. The 1990 documentary Step Across the Border, directed by Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel, is devoted to his work. He received the Demetrio Stratos Prize for lifetime achievement in experimental music in 2008, followed by an honorary doctorate from the University of Huddersfield in 2010. A composition professor at Mills College until his 2018 retirement, he remains an important figure in international musical avant-garde.
