Germaine is coming to a venue near you with a feminist reimagining of traditional music that revisits songs from the past through vocals, fiddle, step dancing, and percussion.
The project brings the words, stories, and female figures of folk repertoire to the foreground. By reinterpreting traditional texts and adapting some of their themes, Germaine explores women's strength, resilience, and diverse voices while connecting them to contemporary issues. This approach also questions gender norms and heteronormativity in sung narratives.
Following the EP Y'a pas d'mal à ça mesdames, Germaine released Chansons honnêtes, its first full-length album. Its thirteen tracks draw from traditional repertoire and are presented in inclusive arrangements that blend polyphony, fiddle, foot percussion, step dancing, and bodhrán. La chose véritable, Mal à tête, Elle avait l'air, Les trois soeurs, Les volontés des filles, and Avec un peu d'sauce are among the album's songs.
Chansons honnêtes received a GAMIQ award for Traditional Album of the Year. Through research, adaptation, and collective creation, Germaine contributes to renewing tradition by centring feminist expression and paying close attention to the stories it carries forward.
