Jacques Poulin-Denis is coming to a venue near you with an innovative artistic practice that blends contemporary dance, theatre, music, and interdisciplinary performance. A Canadian choreographer, composer, director, and performer based in Montreal, Jacques Poulin-Denis has built a reputation for creating works that explore human vulnerability, resilience, and the search for self-determination through a unique combination of movement, sound, and technology. His background in music strongly shapes his choreographic language, which frequently incorporates custom-built devices such as prosthetics, machines, and sensors that influence and generate movement. Inspired in part by his own experience with disability, his work transforms technological innovation into a powerful artistic tool while remaining deeply focused on the human experience. In 2009, he founded the interdisciplinary company Grand Poney, where he continues to serve as artistic director.
Over the course of his career, Jacques Poulin-Denis has created more than a dozen original productions that have been presented in over twenty cities across Canada as well as in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His notable works include Target of God (Cible de Dieu), DORS, Gently Crumbling, The Value of Things (La valeur des choses), (Very) Gently Crumbling, Running Piece, Punch Line, Train-Train, and ON/OFF. His creations examine the relationship between individuals and the structures that shape modern life while combining theatrical storytelling with inventive choreography. The result is a distinctive artistic voice known for its unconventional imagination, subtle humour, and thoughtful exploration of contemporary society.
In addition to creating original works, Jacques Poulin-Denis regularly teaches interdisciplinary creative practices through workshops and master classes. He has been a longtime collaborator with choreographer Mélanie Demers and her company Mayday as a performer, composer, and sound designer. A former resident artist at La Chapelle and later an associated artist at Agora de la danse, he has also completed numerous artistic residencies in Canada and abroad. Through his multidisciplinary vision, innovative choreographic research, and commitment to expanding the possibilities of performance, Jacques Poulin-Denis has become one of the leading voices in contemporary Canadian dance.
