James Roque

James Roque is coming near you with personal comedy shaped by his Filipino and New Zealand identity.

A comedian, writer, and actor, he became a name in New Zealand comedy before moving to Toronto to work in Canada.

His show Boy Mestizo, which explores identity and belonging, earned a nomination for the Fred Award at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival before becoming his first televised comedy special. He later developed Badong and Champorado for international festivals. Champorado was also named a finalist for Best of the Fest at the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Fans may recognize Roque from the New Faces International showcase at Just For Laughs Montreal or from television programs including The Masked Singer NZ, Have You Been Paying Attention? NZ, 7 Days, and Funny Girls. He is also one third of the sketch comedy group Frickin Dangerous Bro and a co-founder of Proudly Asian Theatre, a company created to champion Asian New Zealand stories.

His show Mano Po examines ageing, cultural expectations, and the realization that he has become one of the adults in the family, all through his thoughtful comedic perspective.
