Japanese Breakfast is the indie pop project led by Michelle Zauner, a Korean-American singer-songwriter, performer and producer. She initiated the project in 2013 while still part of the emo band Little Big League, adopting the name Japanese Breakfast.
The debut album Psychopomp arrived in 2016 to critical acclaim, laying out a foundation of introspective and melodic songwriting. In 2017, Soft Sounds from Another Planet expanded her sound with dream pop and shoegaze elements. Her third album Jubilee, released in 2021, turned toward brighter arrangements, joyful textures, and broad recognition—including a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
In 2025 she released For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), an album that delves into darker themes inspired by gothic literature and visual art, showcasing her ability to transform sorrow into vibrant expression and further solidify her role in the independent music scene. Alongside her musical career, she gained literary acclaim with her memoir Crying in H Mart, a bestseller now being adapted into film, highlighting her range across music and writing.
On stage she connects deeply with her audience through heartfelt presence, poignant lyrics and musical depth. Her international tours continue to attract a loyal and growing fanbase.
