Le Messie de Haendel brings together the Orchestre symphonique de Laval, Ensemble ArtChoral, and four soloists for one of the major oratorios of the Baroque repertoire.
Presented in a slightly shortened version, this interpretation is led by Adam Johnson, the OSL's artistic director. Ensemble ArtChoral takes part under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute. This holiday program honours Georg Friedrich Handel, the German-born British composer who was born in 1685.
Handel composed Messiah in 1741 to a libretto by Charles Jennens, built from biblical texts. The oratorio premiered in Dublin in 1742 and is divided into three parts devoted to the Nativity, Passion, and Resurrection. The score combines choruses, solo arias, and orchestral passages. Its famous Hallelujah chorus has become one of the best-known passages in Western choral music. Founded in 1984, the Orchestre symphonique de Laval brings together 53 professional musicians trained at Quebec conservatories and universities. Le Messie de Haendel belongs to the OSL's Les Grands Concerts series and offers a compact approach to this work, whose complete version is usually much longer.
