Monumental is a historical theatre work set at the turn of the twentieth century, when Quebec City hoped to become a transportation hub.
At its centre is the construction of the Quebec Bridge. Arthur Soulard, a young worker from Lévis, joins hundreds of labourers from elsewhere to build what was planned as the largest cantilever bridge in the world. The undertaking promises progress, yet its financial and human costs are immense.
Written by Benoît Drouin-Germain, Monumental uses the form of a tale to examine the relationship between the ruling class and ordinary people, the harsh working conditions endured by labourers, and the consequences of greed. It asks an enduring question: who bears the cost of the large projects that shape a society? This Théâtre La Bordée production features dramaturgy by Michel Nadeau and direction by Gabriel Cloutier Tremblay, with Stéfanelle Auger, Anne Painchaud, Vincent Paquette, and musician Olivier Landry-Gagnon. Monumental offers a theatrical look at a pivotal chapter of Quebec City’s history through collective ambition, progress, and social inequality.
