Urinetown is a satirical musical with a book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, music by Mark Hollmann and additional lyrics by Greg Kotis.
First created at the New York International Fringe Festival in 1999, it later transferred Off-Broadway before opening on Broadway in 2001. Its title introduces a dystopian story in which a severe water shortage has led to a ban on private toilets. Citizens must pay to use public amenities controlled by a corporation until Bobby Strong starts a rebellion.
Urinetown uses parody to examine privatization, social inequality, environmental pressures and musical theatre conventions. Its text draws on major Broadway traditions while developing a deliberately ironic plot. The Broadway production received 10 Tony Award nominations in 2002 and won three awards, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Musical. With its sharp humour and critical view of power, Urinetown has become an important work of contemporary musical theatre. The show continues to be produced internationally by professional and community theatre companies, reflecting the lasting interest in its themes and distinctive writing.
