Yamato Drummers of Japan is a Japanese taiko ensemble founded in 1993 in Asuka-mura, Nara Prefecture.
Its Japanese name, Yamato, refers to the ancient historical region associated with the birthplace of Japan. The group is devoted to taiko drums, instruments deeply connected to Japanese festivals and Shinto rituals. It approaches this tradition by preserving its cultural roots while exploring new musical possibilities.
Since its formation, Yamato Drummers of Japan has given more than 4,800 performances in 55 countries and reached over 10 million people. Its international tours have included Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. The ensemble has created several touring programs, including Spirit of Yamato, The Heartbeat, Fiesta!, The Beat of Courage, The Wings of the Phoenix and The Power of Human Strength. Its collection includes more than 40 taiko drums with different sizes and tones. The largest, the Odaiko, is approximately two metres in diameter and weighs about 500 kilograms. Yamato Drummers of Japan has become a significant international ambassador for contemporary taiko arts and Japanese percussion traditions.
