Abou Diarra is coming near you with music deeply connected to Mali, the n’goni and the traditions of the Wassoulou region.
Born in 1975 in the Sikasso region, this Malian musician and singer is known for his work with the kamélé n’goni, a West African string instrument. After studying with master musician Vieux Kanté, Abou Diarra undertook an uncommon journey on foot between Abidjan, Bamako and Conakry, travelling with only his instrument. That journey across West Africa helped shape his musical approach through encounters with village traditions and contemporary urban sounds.
Based in Paris since 2008, he modified his n’goni by adding strings to expand its musical range. His discography includes Kono Kan Bora, his 2006 debut album, An Ka Belebele in 2010, Sabou in 2013 and Koya in 2016. On Koya, Abou Diarra collaborated with celebrated Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté on the tracks Djarabi and Labanko. He has also worked with American jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd. His catalogue connects the n’goni with influences from African blues, jazz and other global musical traditions.
