Casual is coming near you with a career rooted in the independent hip-hop of the Bay Area.
Born Jonathan Owens in Oakland, California, the rapper and producer is a founding member of the Hieroglyphics collective. He emerged in the early 1990s alongside Del the Funky Homosapien and Souls of Mischief, as the crew established an original voice in West Coast underground rap.
His debut album, Fear Itself, arrived in 1994 and includes That's How It Is, I Didn't Mean To, and Me-O-Mi-O. The record entered the Billboard 200 and features appearances by Del the Funky Homosapien, Pep Love, and Saafir. Casual later expanded his catalogue with Meanwhile..., He Think He Raw, Smash Rockwell, The Hierophant, Big Head Science, and The Art Of Reanimation, a project made with Dead Perry. His work is recognized for complex rhyme schemes and rapid delivery, tied to a distinctly Oakland identity. In 2026, he released Black Magic, a 15-track album featuring Believe in You with Del the Funky Homosapien and Tajai, along with It's Big. After more than three decades of recordings, Casual remains an important name in independent California hip-hop.
