Shyne is coming near you with a major legacy from the Bad Boy Records era of New York rap.
Born Moses Michael Levi Barrow, the Belizean rapper came to prominence in the late 1990s after signing with Bad Boy Records. His deep voice and direct flow quickly set him apart in American hip-hop. His debut album, Shyne, earned platinum certification and includes Bad Boyz, That’s Gangsta, and Bonnie & Shyne, all of which charted on Billboard.
His second album, Godfather Buried Alive, earned gold certification. Shyne’s path is also marked by a lengthy absence from the music industry, followed by his return to Belize, where he entered politics and has served as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives. His story, from a rapid rise in rap to a public career in Belize, is the subject of the documentary The Honorable Shyne. It revisits his music and political journey in detail. Shyne remains associated with a defining period in Brooklyn rap and with collaborations involving hip-hop and reggae figures, including Barrington Levy and Lil’ Cease.
