The Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds is a new Canadian adaptation of a landmark work of Yiddish theatre, written by S. Ansky and adapted by Anton Piatigorsky.
It is presented by the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company in association with Koffler Arts and directed by Richard Rose. Also known as Between Two Worlds, this play holds an enduring place in Jewish theatrical heritage and has received many revivals and translations in numerous languages.
The story connects Leah and Khonen, two young people whose love is thwarted by a broken promise and their families’ expectations. After Khonen’s death, his spirit remains bound to Leah, bringing the narrative into a world where mysticism, faith, duty, and fate intersect. In Jewish tradition, a dybbuk is a spirit that attaches itself to a living person. Ansky, a Russian-Jewish writer, ethnographer, and political activist, drew on ethnographic material collected during expeditions throughout the Pale of Settlement. His work examines obligations between generations, the weight of vows, and the boundary between the living and the dead. This adaptation by Anton Piatigorsky places a lasting classic in a contemporary Canadian context.
