The Mary Wallopers

The Mary Wallopers are coming near you with a direct, contemporary approach to Irish folk music.

From Dundalk in County Louth, the group was first formed by brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy with their friend Seán McKenna. They travelled across Ireland singing and collecting songs, a process that helped shape their repertoire. Their music draws from traditional Irish ballads while adding punk-adjacent energy, humour, and lyrics that also address social realities.

The self-titled debut album The Mary Wallopers arrived in 2022. The group followed with Irish Rock N Roll in 2023, a record that brings together traditional songs and its first original songs on an album. Its track list includes The Holy Ground, Wexford, Bould O'Donoghue, Rakes of Poverty, and Gates of Heaven. The group is often associated with the renewed interest in Irish folk through its direct way of carrying songs passed down across generations. Before The Mary Wallopers, the Hendy brothers also developed the satirical rap project TPM. With Dundalk roots, two albums, and a commitment to reworking oral traditions, The Mary Wallopers have become a notable name in Ireland's new folk scene.
