The Spongebob Musical

The SpongeBob Musical brings Stephen Hillenburg's animated series to musical theatre with the familiar characters of Bikini Bottom.

The book is by Kyle Jarrow and the musical production was conceived by Tina Landau. The story begins when a volcano threatens to destroy Bikini Bottom, forcing SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Plankton and the other residents to find a way to save their underwater home. Centered on friendship, cooperation and optimism, the plot gives the Nickelodeon characters an original theatrical story.

First presented in Chicago in 2016 before moving to Broadway in 2017, The SpongeBob Musical is notable for a score created by a wide range of songwriters. Contributors include Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! at the Disco, The Flaming Lips, Plain White T's and They Might Be Giants, with additional music by Tom Kitt. Its varied creative roster brings together pop, rock and alternative music writers. The musical received 12 Tony Award nominations in 2018, including Best Musical, and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. The SpongeBob Musical underlines the lasting reach of SpongeBob SquarePants across generations.
