Clown(s) is a contemporary opera by Montréal composer and librettist Ana Sokolović that offers a poetic reflection on the human experience through the world of clowns. Created for Opéra de Montréal, the work is conceived as a 'favola in musica', or musical fable, inspired by the artistic worlds of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Federico Fellini and George Sand. Combining contemporary opera, physical theatre, circus arts and an invented language, Clown(s) presents a distinctive vision of modern music theatre.
Premiering in 2026, the production is staged by Martin Genest and conducted by Jiří Roeň. It brings together four soloists, the Opéra de Montréal Chorus, a brass and percussion ensemble featuring the ondes Martenot, and performers from DynamO Théâtre. The story begins when a solitary clown opens a suitcase, revealing a universe that explores the milestones of life, including birth, discovery, love, joy, conflict and loss.
