Montreal Alouettes 43 vs Saskatchewan Roughriders 10
Mosaic Stadium (Regina, SK), Saturday 18 July 2009
The Montreal Alouettes continued their undefeated season by adding a third victory in a row, this time facing the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Alouettes once again dominated the game, especially the last two quarters, beating them 43 to 10.
This victory of the Montreal Alouettes also marks two major events. We already knew that Bryan Chiu would equal a team record by competing in his 204th match in the sparrow’s uniform, but quarterback Anthony Calvillo would also go in the record books by securing his 333rd touchdown pass career, which gives him the second place in the history of the CFL in this chapter.
The Alouettes defensive unit had shown some excellent team work at the beginning of the game, fixing some errors from the offensive players. The Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant had a difficult game because of the good work of Tim Burke, John Bowman; who managed a 3rd bag this season, and company.
Roughrider defense was very solid, but the mark was only 14-8 after the first half of the match.
The massacre in the second half
But that was the same case in the last game; the Alouettes offensive machine was switched on during the second half, collecting 29 points while only conceding two poor points to the opponent.
Calvillo has once again been more then great in the match. In all, the Montreal Alouettes veteran completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 281 yards, leading to a pair of touchdowns. It's Kerry Carter who received the first touchdown pass with success, while Kerry Watkins completed another, for the third match in a row.
Ben Cahoon was the person who made the longest distance in receptions passes. Cahoon completed 7 of Calvillo launched for 86 yards in all.
At the race on the ground, Avon Cobourne has proved to be the man for the job, completing 25 courses for a total of 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns. By comparison, the Roughriders have collected only 53 yards on the ground.
In addition to being in the lead of the Canadian Football League, the Alouettes are the only unbeaten team in the circuit. They will attempt to retain their position on Thursday, when they face the Hamilton Tigercats at the Percival Molson Stadium.
