Montreal Alouettes launder the Toronto Argonauts

Tuesday, August 11 2009 10:34AM
Montreal Alouettes 25 vs Toronto Argonauts 0
Friday 07 August 2009 - Percival Molson Stadium (Montreal)

The Montreal Alouettes have not only found the way to victory (after their first defeat of the season last week), but they also accomplished an exploit that had not been seen in Montreal in over 33 years: a perfect game. The Alouettes defeated the Toronto Argonauts with the score of 25-0.

As it often seems to be the case this season, the Alouettes offensive was slow to start. After, having collected a mere point in the first quarter, the Alouettes have taken the lead in more serious manner in the second quarter thanks to Avon Cobourne touchdown, followed by Adrian MacPherson. Cobourne would add another one in the fourth quarter.

But it is at the pass level that the Montreal Alouettes have really shone. Ben Cahoon has managed 8 pass receptions, collecting 103 yards bringing his career total to more than 12,000 yards. Only 7 other players had been able to reach this level in the history of the CFL.

Jamal Richardson (8 receptions, 84 yards) and Kerry Watkins (3 receptions for 89 yards) also crossed a lot of ground.

The quarterback Anthony Calvillo continued his excellent season, completing 35 of his 43 pass attempts for 395 yards.

The defensive unit is needed

It goes without saying that during this perfect defeat, the defensive unit deserves to be congratulated. The defence of the Montreal Alouettes was reflected in muzzling the Argonauts quarterback Kerry Joseph and Cody Pickett his replacement. Joseph has managed only 7 of his 14 pass attempts, collecting a meagre 61 yards, in addition to being the victim of 5 bags.

Pickett slightly did better with 83 yards on the pass, 7 pass attempts on a total of 11. He missed by a hair a pass that could of broke the Montreal Alouettes shutout at the end of the match but he failed to cross the 3-yard line of the goal area at the third test.

On 7 sacks of the Alouettes in the match, Jermaine McElveen claimed 3 of them, while Anwar Stewart has 2, both against Joseph.
