Montreal Canadiens 2 vs Buffalo Sabers 1 (in overtime)
Saturday, October 3, 2009 – at HSBC Center in Buffalo.
In many ways, the second game of the season for the Montreal Canadiens was similar to the first one. Like last Thursday, the men of Jacques Martin fled away with an undeserved victory, supported by their goalie Carey Price.
If we trusted the laws of probabilty, the Canadians would not have won this game. Lined in shots on goal categories (only 17 against 35), the blue-white-red bearer have once again appeared disorganized and lost.
The Buffalo Sabers took advantage of this to soon strike. At 2:40 of the first engagement, Tim Connolly scored his first goal of the season on the powerplay.
The trouble is that the hosts have never been able to add in another. Worse still, Lindsay Ruff's men saw a fourth line player from the Canadians find the bottom of the net while they were operating on a power play. It was Travis Moen who scored his second goal in as many games, he who had only 3 in 19 games with the Sharks in San Jose last year.
For the rest, Carey Price held the fort, blocking the door and forcing the holding of an overtime period.
A Gomez / Gionta rebound
After seeing the Sabers beine a serious threat in the territory of Canadiens in the middle of the overtime period, the accomplices Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez reversed the course of the game.
Gomez took a powerful shot which missed the target, but the puck took a funny jump on the ramp and Brian Gionta, who was in the right place at the right time took advantage of this opportunity to score, his second goal of the season.
The hospital is already overflowing
Unfortunately, tonights game had another thing in common with the one on Thursday - the wounded. We are not talking about an injury to a player as vital Andrei Markov, but the Montreal Canadiens lost the services of defenseman Ryan O'Byrne who injured his lower body, and Glen Metropolit, who broke his ribs after colliding with Patrick Kaleta.
Neither of them has returned to play during the match
