First loss for the Alouettes

Friday, July 31 2009 10:25AM
Montreal Alouettes 19 vs. Edmonton Eskimos 33
July 30th 2009, at the Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton)

The Montreal Alouettes had their winning streak stopped at four when they
were down 33-19 facing the Edmonton Eskimos at the Commonwealth Stadium. The same Eskimos were defeated by the Alouettes three weeks ago by a score of
50-16.

The Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray led his team to a convincing victory with
22 assists on 26 successful attempts, 3 of them creating a touchdown.

The Alouettes had taken the lead after the first quarter, thanks to two punt
placement Damon Duval.

The problem is that it was not until 6:53 in the fourth quarter that we saw
the Montreal Alouettes enter a first hit, by  Avon Cobourne. This was the
only touchdown from the match for the Montreal team.

Before that, the Eskimos took the lead and widened the gap with a pair of
touchdowns in the second quarter and another in the third, that of Fred
Stamps on a pass from 28 yards.

The same Stamps hurt the Alouettes again with less than 4 minutes to play in
the match. Ricky Ray served a long pass of 48 yards for Stamps to strike
another touchdown, bringing the game out of reach for the Alouettes.

The Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo has undergone 2 sacks, he had not
seen one in the first four games of the season.

Twelve penalties called against the Alouettes also harms the momentum that
the Montreal team were trying to create in order to return from the rear.

The Montreal Alouettes are still the first team in the Canadian Football
League with an impressive form, 4 wins and 1 defeat.
