Rogers Cup: Tsonga surprise Federer, Nadal also falls

If the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup was following exactly the same logic as the global ranking of ATP (with the best 8 players in the world in four games of the quarter-finals), this round of 8 has reserved several surprises. The world numbers 1 and 2, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both conceded to a stronger opposition than expected.

Federer and Nadal eliminated

Federer was facing the French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 7th global player.

After losing a hotly disputed first round by a score of 6-7 (5), the Swiss appeared to be in full control of the game, easily winning the second set 6-1 and taking the lead 5-1 in the third.

But Tsonga had not said its last word. The fiery Frenchman managed to come back from behind to tie the sets and eventually won the tie-break.

The number 2 in the world, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, has also eat the dirt facing Juan Martin Del Potro who was in full possession of his means. Having stood up to the Argentine in the first set, Nadal finally collapsed in two runs, 7-6 (5) and 6-1. 

Roddick and Murray complete the square as

The other two players that have reached the semi-finals were Andy Murray and Andy Roddick.

The third global player,Britain's Andy Murray disposed of his opponent in the quarter-finals, Nikolay Davydenko with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4. With the defeat of Nadal, Murray approached the second rank in the world and could even achieve it if he went far enough in the Canadian Open.

Roddick (5th) had a more difficult time to defeat his opponent, the fourth global player Novak Djokovic. However, he did it in two rounds 6-4 and 7-6 (4).
