Montreal Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs ended in 4-3 after overtime
Thursday October 1st 2009 - Air Canada Center (Toronto)
Although the game was dominated by the Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens
managed to win his first game of the season. A goal from Josh Georges at the
very end of the overtime helped the Jacques Martin troop to leave the Air
Canada Center with two valuable points in the ranking.
Obviously, it will take time before the cohesion between the players new
sets off Canadians. The turnovers were numerous and also the missed passes.
Luckily, Carey Price was on watch. The ceberus of the Canadiens was bombed
in each period. The Maple Leafs, who controlled the game most of the time,
led 46 shots in his direction, but the young keeper stumbled on three
occasions.
Komisarek's indiscipline
The Canadians were the first to register a score. Brian Gionta wasted no
time to score his first goal in the regular season. Just 4 seconds after the
face off for the Maple Leafs territory following a penalty awarded to Mike
Komisarek, the little striker of the Canadiens found his way to the enemy
goalie and then push the puck behind him.
The Maple Leafs responded without delay. Alexei Ponikarovsky completed a
nice pass from Mikhail Grabovski after a mistake by defenseman Hal Gill to
level the score.
Travis Moen and Matt Stajan each scored a goal for their respective teams in
the second period. Stajan added a second in the third period to give his
team the lead. An advance to a well deserved win of 3 to 2.
But at the very end of the third period, the support players of the
Canadiens played the heroes. Glen Metropolit took advantage of another
penalty awarded to Komisarek to deflect a shot-pass from Josh Gorges to
force the holding of an overtime period.
Gorges makes the difference
It's finally a beautiful piece of a play by Michael Cammalleri who was
behind the winning goal, that of Josh Gorges.
Cammalleri completed his evening's work with 1 goal and 1 assist for Josh
Gorges and Glen Metropolit, while Tomas Plekanec recorded 2 assists to his
record.
